Climate Science Legal Defense Fund Events at AGU 2017

More than 20,000 members of the geosciences community will gather in New Orleans from December 12-16, 2017 for the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, the world’s largest gathering of Earth and space scientists. We’ll be there with a full slate of legal education programming, including a workshop on science activism and the opportunity for a free consultation with one of our attorneys.

Below is a list of our activities; you can also stop by Booth 1554 in the Exhibit Hall to say hello, pick up our free legal education materials, and collect swag.

One-on-One With a CSLDF Attorney
Monday, December 11 – Thursday, December 14, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Morial Convention Center — Second Floor, Room 237

These free consultations allow researchers to meet with an attorney who works on science litigation and ask legal questions regarding their scientific work. Email to make an appointment. Appointments are available in 30-minute time slots, 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Workshop: Legal Issues for Scientists Interested in Activism
Tuesday, December 12, 10:00-11:00 a.m.
Morial Convention Center — Second Floor, Room 240-241

Attorneys from the Climate Science Legal Defense Fund and American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) will discuss what scientists interested in activism should know, including:

How to separate personal activism from professional responsibilities
Free speech rights and restrictions
Public protest guidelines
Anti-lobbying rules for federally-funded scientists
Open records laws

Talk: Openness Versus Obstruction: The Importance of Protecting Open Data and Transparency, While Guarding Against Obstruction and Interference

Susan Rosenthal, CSLDF staff attorney, will discuss true transparency in science and the importance of defending the candid debate, open collaboration, and academic freedom that is integral to the scientific process.

Talk: Federal Agency Scientific Integrity Policies and the Legal Landscape
Wednesday, December 13, 11:48 – 11:59 a.m.

Lauren Kurtz, CSLDF’s executive director, will provide a legal perspective on avenues for complaining about scientific integrity violations and the process of actually making a complaint or bringing the matter to federal court.
