AGU Fall Meeting 2025: Anticipating the Legal Landscape for Scientific Research & Communication
Wednesday December 17, 2025 | 2:15 – 5:45pm CDT | Hall EFG (Poster Hall)
The scientific community faces unprecedented political attacks — federal scientists have suffered mass firings, research programs have been rolled back, and critical data sets are imperiled.
The deluge of headlines has made understanding the legal landscape surrounding these political actions deeply difficult. The Climate Science Legal Defense Fund navigates legal challenges that scientists and researchers are facing in these uncertain times. In this session, we will provide clarity on the current legal landscape for many of these cases and shed light on the future dangers and changing tactics being employed by those relentlessly attacking the scientific endeavor.
We will provide insight and guidance into how to combat and counter these attacks. We will also provide a thorough primer on your First Amendment rights and best practices on participating in advocacy and activism safely, both professionally and personally.
