How Scientists Can Help Strengthen Scientific Integrity and Advocate for Science-Based Policy: A Workshop with GSA’s Connects 2021 Annual Meeting

Join us for a free virtual workshop on Tuesday, 12 October, being held as part of Geological Society of America’s GSA Connects 2021 annual meeting and with the support of the GSA Geology and Society Division. In this workshop, Augusta Wilson, an attorney with the Climate Science Legal Defense Fund (CSLDF), will lead a discussion about tools researchers can use to strengthen scientific integrity and help ensure that policy decisions are informed by sound science.

In this workshop, based on part on CSLDF’s research into how agencies currently address scientific integrity issues and our work developing a model scientific integrity policy, we will discuss what constitutes a scientific integrity violation at federal agencies, universities, and other research institutions, and how those entities handle scientific integrity complaints. We’ll also talk about how academic freedom principles intersect with scientific integrity and how scientists can use both frameworks to address threats to independent science.

The workshop is on Tuesday, 12 October, from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. PDT/ 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. EDT. Although it is being held as part of GSA’s Connects 2021 annual meeting, it’s also open and free for non-attendees. Scientists from all disciplines are welcome. The Zoom link to join the workshop is below.

Finally, any GSA Connects 2021 attendee who has a legal question related to their scientific work and would like a free, confidential one-on-one consultation with our staff attorney should reach out to Augusta Wilson (awilson@csldf.org) to schedule. These one-on-ones will be available on Monday, October 11 and Tuesday, October 12 between 8am-5pm PT/11am-8pm ET.
